Family Joy Blog Link Party #38

We’re only a few weeks away from Halloween and I feel like October already flying by. I glanced down at the costume aisle at the store the other day and realized my daughter hasn’t even decided on what she wants to be. Usually, she has her next costume picked out when she gets home from trick or treating (the previous year)!
You’ll notice my pick involves ideas for tween costumes 🙂

**Reminder– please ensure you have easily accessible share buttons on your post. We really want to share, tweet and pin your creative ideas

DIY Candy Corn Garland

DIY Candy Corn Garland adds a touch of sparkle with a whimsical flare.

candy-corn

Okay, so I love the look of candy corn. I could take them or leave them when it comes to eating them, but I think they look really cute! Maybe it’s the color blocking or simple triangle shape, either way this garland is super easy to make.

Grab the goods:
-Thick white foam ($1)
-Glitter yellow sticker foam ($1)
-Glitter orange sticker foam ($1)
-Glitter white sticker foam ($1)
-Black ribbon (probably already have some around your house)
Total= Less than $5! Gotta love Micheal’s 🙂

First
Draw out a basic triangle with rounded corners. I made mine 3-4 inches so I could get 8 pieces of candy corn out of my sheet. Trace your template onto the white foam. When you cut them out, take note that there is a slight difference between the front and back when it comes to the edges.

candy-corn

Next

Take the same template and fold it into 3 parts. Then trace the template on the orange, yellow and white sparkle foam. I like to trace on the back so there’s no pencil marks showing. Cut out and here’s the super easy part… peel and stick!
*Tip- check each colored piece against the white base, and trim if needed while the sticker back is still ON. This will make it easy to cut and save your scissors from getting that icky sticky stuff on the blades.

Candy Corn Garland

Last
Grab your black ribbon and make your candy corn pieces into a garland. Add a drop of hot glue to the back of each piece to secure them to the ribbon.
Now find the perfect place to hang your garland, and be sure it will gets some light shining on it so you can see it shimmer.

Why You Should Teach Your Kids “It’s Not OK”

Why you should teach your kids It's Not Ok

Have you ever noticed how often those words are said?

How many times have you heard a child apologize to another child and their response is- “it’s ok”.

But here’s the thing, it’s really not ok.  Instead let’s teach our kids the power of forgiveness!

**This is a life skill that will help our children understand that they have a choice from an early age.

Since we’ve implemented this in our family, I really give props to my daughter. She forgives and lets things go really easily. When I’m on the other end of her sweet (but maturing too fast) voice saying “I forgive you” it’s quite an amazing feeling. I’d like to think she makes that choice to forgive quickly partly because she’s awesome and partly because of how we’re teaching her.

She doesn’t have to forgive, and she most certainly doesn’t have to right away. She makes that choice each and every time. She recognizes that she too needs forgiveness and holding on to anger doesn’t feel good inside.

Now I’ll share my side of things. I remember countless times throughout my life, adult life especially- where I’ve responded with “it’s ok”. Then I would start the conversation in my head (picture the Inside Out Disney movie characters) and become upset thinking NO it’s not ok, and why did I even say that. Ever happen to you?

The other day my daughter said something to me that hurt my feelings, I can’t even remember what it was. Yet I felt like this was a perfect illustration of what I’m talking about, and you’ll see why.
She quickly realized I was upset, apologized and waited…. waited for me to give her the same fast response she normally gives me when she says “I forgive you”. Crickets. But I wasn’t ready to flash back those 3 words. I explained to her that I needed a minute.

Yea for another opportunity to teach! Even though she is quick to forgive it doesn’t mean others will always be… and that’s alright. Sometimes people need time to digest, process and move to the stage of forgiveness.

Important note, I (of course) told my daughter I forgave her and she (will continue) to think before she speaks 🙂
Gotta love life lessons!

Pie Tin Picture Frame

Display sentimental family photos in a pie tin.

pie-tin-frame

As the holidays are quickly approaching, it makes me think of family more than ever.  I’ve always had a special relationship with my grandparents in particular. I was blessed to have created so many memories with them that I will truly treasure!
Recently I was given this photo of my grandmother cooking in the kitchen and I fell in love with it. It’s black and white, which makes it cool (wink). But most of all, it captures the joy and beautiful spirit that she was filled with.

Since the kitchen was a special place for us to spend time together, baking cookies, I couldn’t imagine a more perfect place to display this photo.

We’ve all seen lovely frames, but this is a kitchen… so let’s cook up something creative!

supplies-pie-tin-frame

frame-pie-tin

I’ve used a pie tin as a picture frame. I found this one at Target and really liked the fall color theme. It would also be neat to use actually metal/aluminum pie tins. Maybe gather 3 together and display a different photo in each one.

$3 Pumpkin Door Hanger

$3 Ombre Pumpkin Door Hanger can be made in under 20 minutes, it’s so easy!

pumpkin-door-hanger

Grab your supplies:
-Aluminium Round Tray
-Green Ribbon
-Green Tissue Paper
-Paint Brush
-Orange Paint
*To achieve the ombre look you’ll also want another paint color. I used yellow, but white would be another option.

supplies-ombre-pumpkin

First– Grab your paint brush and your paint. I started with a blob of yellow and then added orange (I added half as much orange as there was yellow). Start painting the top of the tray.
Next, you’ll want to add more paint so create your next color mixture by a blob of yellow and equal amount of orange paint. Paint across and blend slightly with the above color.
Last,  you want all orange. Continue painting and blend slightly with the above color.

painting-ombre-pumpkin

Second– Take your ribbon and drape it over itself 3 times. I love wire ribbon because it molds great!

ombre-pumpkin-door-hanger

Third– Take your green tissue paper and tightly begin rolling in. At the end of my stack, I had a tightly scrunched stem!

Now hang up and enjoy 🙂

DIY Faux Mirrored Letter

I love how this DIY mirrored letter turned out!

diy-mirrored-letter

Grab the goodies to get started:

*Cardboard Letter B (I actually made mine, a tutorial coming in an upcoming post-wink)
*Piece of Plexi Glass (I used a piece that was 8×10 from an Ikea frame but they also sell a variety of sizes in the craft store)
*Exacto Knife
*Mirrored Spray
*Paint pen or Sharpie

Let’s jump in and creating because I’m excited.

First, grab your cardboard letter. They seem to be all over these days. They’re inexpensive as well. One thing I’ve noticed, cardboard letters seem to come in a few “set” sizes. That’s why  I’ll show up in an upcoming post how easy and free it can be to make your own custom sized cardboard letter.
Trace your cardboard letter onto a piece of paper as a template.

diy-mirror-letter-b

Second, take your template and SLOWLY begin outlining on the plexi glass. This first impression is important, so make sure you go slow and steady.
Also, use the natural straight line edge, don’t work anymore than you have too. So basically, you’re only tracing the two curves of the “B”.
Now that you have the first cut, you will continue to go over those lines multiple times. Again, slowly is the key! Every time you go over a line it will get easier and is cutting the plexi deeper.

diy-letter-plexi-glass

Third, this step is meshed with the step above really. You will be tracing with the exacto knife and starting to punch out the letter. Be gentle and don’t force it. The plexi will talk to you, lol, if it’s ready it will easily separate… if not, it needs a little more exacto knife lovin’.

diy-mirror-letter-spray-paint

Next, comes that beautiful creation- mirrored spray paint. I remember when I first discovered this, it was such a happy day 🙂 I’m going to confess something, are you ready…I never actually read the directions. I’ve spray painted for years and as a result I’m in the habitat of picking up a can and pressing the button.
BUT, this can clearly states to spray paint the reverse side. Did you know that? If not, you can count that as your new knowledge for the day.

Optional– spray paint your cardboard letter with a silver metallic spray. I like the multiple options available here. If you want a universal look, I advise painting the letter. However, if you want a contrast- leave the letter natural or give it a wood stain look.

Lastly, put it all together and add an impact with a single word! I chose thankful but a few others that would work well: grateful, happy, beautiful. I used a black paint pen yet a sharpie would also work.

diy-mirrored-letter

It’s simple yet something different which is what I love about it:) Thanks for reading!
