Teaching Tweens the Difference Between Discussion and Direction

I don’t know about you, but in our family it is vital for our daughter to understand the moments of discussion and direction!

You know what I’m talking about, there are time when you want your child to be involved, you want their thoughts and opinions. And then, there’s the times when you feel a lecture coming on- and it’s their turn to sit and listen. But what ques are we giving the kids to let them know when to speak and join in the convo and when to keep their lips closed and ears open?

I also like to make my expectations clear, as earl as possible. It’s like getting a speeding ticket when the speed limit sign was tucked behind a bunch of trees and you had no idea it changed, it’s feels unfair- right?!

Label the two whenever possible!

One example “I don’t really understand why you made that choice… I want to try and understand what you we’re thinking” Be inviting with questions and pausing for reflection.

Another example could look like this…”It appears you are feeling frustrated, but I am giving you a direction, which means even if this isn’t what you want to do- you need to be respectful”

Social ques are so important in life and kids will be faced with picking up on tone, facial expressions, and listening- learning when to speak up.

Be sure to offer both options.

Many times it seems that we really need to be authoritative after something happens, or remind them of the rules and expectations.

Yet, sometimes- especially as tweens get older they need to be apart of the discussion to stay engaged in what you’re saying!

Tulle Tassel Garland

We have a birthday coming up- aren’t birthdays the best! In our family, that means decorating, and more decorating. After all, it’s a special day to celebrate! This year we’re planning a big party so I’m started on the prep early.
I love the look and whimsical feel of tulle, so I went shopping. The best part- it’s so inexpensive!

Supplies needed:
*Any color tulle- I bought 1/2 yard of each color.
How long you want your garland, will determine how much tulle to buy.
*String/yarn
*Scissors

Step 1

Measure out the length of your first tassel. Mine were about 7-8 inches long and 5 inches wide. Stack 4 pieces on top of one another and start cutting.
Best to make them a little longer, as you can always trim them down if you need too.

Step 2

Grab the middle of the stack and begin to twist. After twisting, wrap it around in a small circle. I had some white string handy so that’s what I used but pipe cleaners could also work.

Step 3

When you have all your tassels cut and put together, it’s time to string the garland. You can use a thicker yarn/rope to keep the tassels in place or use a thin string, which will cause them to gather in the center. I liked this look 🙂

The rain is here! A weekend filled with lots of rain 🙂 Our family is keeping busy inside with our active new addition- a one year old! I’ve never felt older 🙂 He’s reminding us to giggle at the little things in life.
Anywho- I’m looking forward to seeing what you all have been working on… so onto the party!

Easy Metallic Wall Art

These metallic wall art pieces will give a shine to any ordinary wall and it’s super easy to make yourself!

I love anything shiny, I’ll just admit that straight out of the gate. Don’t you (wink)?
So when I saw this metallic tape I knew I could put it to good use with an easy wall art idea.

Here’s what you’ll need:
-2 canvases
-Metallic tape
See, I told you it was super easy!

The hardest part is figuring out what pattern you what to create.

I was looking to fill a small space so I used 2 8×10 canvases.

First, you’ll want to lay out the tape by CAREFULLY pulling out a specific length. I use the word carefully because it can crinkle easily.

After you’ve cut each strip to the desired length, move them into position.

Now, here’s where you want to slowly pull the backing off the tape while “taping” it in place. You will have some lines and wrinkles (unless your Super woman) simply because that’s how this tape works.

My tip- move, adjust and pull as little as possible to avoid additional crinkles.

Although I just made 2 canvases, I now think 4 would look best… or a really big canvas.
I’ve heard of someone using this tape and applying it directly to their walls! I don’t think I would feel comfortable with that personally as it’s pretty sticky tape- who knows what will come off!

DIY Burlap Napkin Rings

DIY Burlap Napkin Rings

Dress up your table with these organic feeling napkin ring. Thrown in your favorite cloth napkin and a detail atop, you’ll have your own unique table setting. They are SO easy to make!

 Gather your supplies:

-Paper towel or toilet paper roll

-Burlap

-Detail to add on top (I used a key, package from Michael’s $1 section)

-Glue

DIY Burlap Napkin Rings

Cut up the roll by your desired width… I liked just over an inch.

DIY Napkin Rings

Begin by rolling the burlap over the paper roll to determine the amount you’ll need to cut. Glue down the burlap to the roll and plan on the edge that will show. You can either fold this over the edge or show the fray (which I like so I went with that).

DIY Burlap Napkin Ring

Tuck in the excess and glue where needed.

DIY Napkin Ring

Add in your detail, make it unique! I love the look of a key, despite the fact it has nothing to do with my tables-cape lol! A drop of hot glue and your good to go 🙂 Slip in the cloth napkin of your choice and you’re done!
